Like the prior reviewer says the acoustic instrument sounds in the SD2 are far better than similar Roland synth modules. I've been searching for the best acoustic musical instruments for many years and not other module even at 2 or 3 times the price has as many excellent sounds.

The Tenor Sax, in fact, is a wonderful breathy Tenor reminiscent of Stand Getz not only in the low register but also in the upper one, whereas I find the baritone sax to be too harsh, I prefer a more mellow Gerry Mulligan quality.

The clarinet is also excellent, especially in the upper register where it has a rich, brilliant voice -perfect for jazz.

The violin and viola recorded w natural vibrato are also top notch -with wonderful dynamics.

The Golden Trumpet is one of the smoothest trumpets you can find and the various muted Trumpets are also pretty good.

The flute is quite good, but I've got better trombone sounds elsewhere.

This synthesizer works fantastically well with a wind controller such as the EWI-4000s, the newer EWI-USB, or Yamaha models.

For the maximum fun, be sure to use it with Band-in-a-Box and you will have a wonderful combo going in no time at all. You will notice that when you enable an entire family of an instrument, you will get some instruments that obviously are outside the family. This is because the SD2 has a modified General Midi implementation, done, I'm told by the manufacturer, in order to remain compatible with some older Ketron synth modules/instruments which were designed prior to the popularity of General Midi. I was a professional guitar player for years, 20 years ago (closer to 30 years ago) and had to give it up due to insulin dependent diabetes. The damage of 4-5 times a day of finger sticks to test blood sugars and the infections caused by the callouses of many daily hours of playing were just too great for my body to overcome. I haven't been able to play guitar since.

I found this guitar while shopping at a Sharper Image store and was instantly hooked. It doesn't create any pressure on my fingers at all, because the electronic keypads only require a very light touch. It does not have the feel of a real guitar and can't begin to pick up the nuances of play from real strings, but if you are unable to play a regular guitar for whatever reason, it's a great alternative.

The guitar does go momentarily slightly out of tune every time a new chord is played, but it only lasts 1 or 2 seconds and unless you are acutely aware of tone values, probably won't notice the difference, it self tunes immediately. It is easier to pick out songs than a regular guitar because the steel pickup doesn't vibrate the way a regular string will, hence your picking can be both truer and faster than with a regular guitar and no buzzing of strings either.

For a beginner, I can see this as having a fast learning curve, but will probably create some problems with transferring onto a regular guitar because as long as you hit the correct frets, it will give you true sound, which on a regular guitar will never happen unless the correct amount of pressure and the correct fingering is taking place.

I don't know how durable this instrument will be long term but I am currently deeply in love (again).

The perfect six-string treat for beginners, Yamaha's EZ-EG guitar is part electric guitar, part portable keyboard, and all fun. Twelve lighted frets show hand position for chords, and three convenient play modes include strumming (practice for right hand-- chords change automatically), chord training (practice for left hand--no strumming required, just make chord changes), and full play (practice for both hands--it shows you chord changes while you strum and play chords).

I recently had the oppportunity to compare the Alesis Performance Pad against four other drum pad machines: Roland's SPD-S and Octapod, Yamaha's DTX-Multi-12, and DD-65.

I ended up choosing the DTX because it has the most sensitive pads. The others I had to bash away on to get notes, and it was a constant frustration to have hits ignored over and over again. The Performance Pad came close, however--it's pretty sensitive to drumsticks.

The biggest disappointment with the Performance Pad is the sounds--they sound like circa 1995 drum sounds. but I believe this has been addressed in the PP Pro.) Not a big deal for practice/learning, but making a recording... well, I'll figure something out if I decide to use it.

The PP was made as cheaply as possible. The LCD is monochrome?tag=thebestdiscount-20/reflective with several fixed text messages. It can be hard to read at certain angles and if you go too far it's totally unreadable. The PP has many editing tools, but I find them frustrating to use given the poor quality of the LCD. No backlight either.

Compared against the others: the Octapad has a much better display but isn't as intuitive to use. The Multi-12 has more pads and better drum sounds, plus "fingertip touch" sensitivity--you don't need Bamm-Bamm to be your drummer. The SPD-S is overkill if you don't plan on sampling, and has the same pad insensitivity issues as most of the others.

I really want to like the DD-65, it seems like a decent machine for beginners but it too suffers from numb pads. Given the way the pads are isolated from one another it seems to me they could crank the sensitivity way up and never have problems with crosstalk.

(Crosstalk refers to a situation where hitting one pad activates nearby pads. This is a potential problem for most electronic drum pads, but on the DD-65 the pads are far apart and set at different heights, making crosstalk almost impossible.)

If the lack of quality drum sounds bugs you, you could always attach it to a computer via MIDI and have the computer generate the sounds. This may not be that easy, since the PP uses channel 1 to transmit and i don't even know if you can change this to channel 10 (the traditional channel for MIDI drum kits).

Would I recommend this? Try it out, just make sure you hang onto the receipt. Amazon makes comparing equipment pretty easy since they take care of all of the return shipping stuff.

Dynamic Articulation
Discerning ears will notice that each sound is actually a series of different samples; multiple dynamic-level samples and articulations are all built in so as you play harder and softer, the drum or cymbal changes its timbre, not just its volume. This engineered realism is known as Dynamic Articulation, an Alesis exclusive.

This results in sounds that respond accurately not only to dynamic changes, but also with the appropriate timbral and color changes you'd expect from their acoustic counterparts. You can play with or without reverb for different room sounds and enjoy a wide variety of rimshots, rim clicks and different stick-placement sounds on the cymbals. Seamless operation including control for the parameters of plugins, (and 3rd party plugins). It doesnt take long to setup if you are a native ProTools user. We all know ProTools can be a bit moody sometimes, but its a good system for many good reasons. I have used other control surfaces, such as the expandable Mackie unit and the Command 8 blows it out of the water in both quality and operation. After a little bit of learning all the buttons and their operation, you may never have to use the mouse again. the motorized faders work great and are a necessity for automation and mixdown of those multiple vocal harmony recordings. If you are serious about ProTools, get off the mouse and grab yourself one of these.
